Question by regerugged: For those of you who favor socialized medicine in the US, consider this?
In today’s mail I got my 2012 Medicare and HMO “Notice of Change and Evidence of Coverage” book…and I mean “book.” It is 405 pages long and 8 1/2 by 11 inches in size. It is the same size as an Erie, PA telephone book.
That is what we get with government involvement.

Entry from: Mkumbara, Tanzania Entry Title: “Medicine in the Mountains” Entry: “Jamie and I survived our first hot and mosquito filled month in Tanzania, and have finally gotten around to updating our travelogue. We arrived on January 5th in Dar Es Salaam, a bustling city with daily sizzling temperatures of 35 degrees celsius, in which we happily only had to spend a minimal amount of time. Within a few days we hopped onto a local bus to our first destination in Tanzania, a rural town called Mkumbara in which I had arranged to spend one month volunteering in a small medical clinic. Mkumbara happens to be located in the foothills of the Usambara Mountains in northern Tanzania, an area with a great diversity of plant and animal life, and excellent hiking trails. The medical clinic where I spent my time is subsidized by the local sawmill company, and served mainly the sawmill’s staff and family members. However, it also attracted a fair number of patients from the surrounding villages and Masai settlements. It was a very small clinic with only a staff of four – the Medical Officer (an individual trained in basic community medicine), a laboratory technician, and two nurses. The facility was quite basic and very run-down, with a lack of even the most essential equipment. There wasn’t even a measuring tape …
