Should Donations Be Returned?
Question by Mastermind: Should donations be returned?
My wife and I lost a child stillborn. We found that “genetic testing” was an option that may answer questions as to what happened since the autopsy came back inconclusive. The testing can be very costly, so my mother put together a letter explaining the tragedy that occured, and explained what we were doing. The letter went on to ask for donations to offset the cost. A total of 40 family and friends sent a total of $ 1600. Now, after anxiously waiting 3 months for the results, they tell us they never did the test because they DID find something on the autopsy. The whole situation has been a very trying for us, and the medical bills for my wife’s stay in the hospital accumulate to well over $ 2000, not to mention the costs for funeral, burial, etc. We are not doing well financially right now so I suggested using the donations towards medical bills. My mother said this would be fraudulent and I need to send all the money back. What would be the proper thing to do? Please help!
Apparently the autopsy, combined with my wife’s bloodwork concludes Fifths disease as the reason. Why it took 3 months to tell us the testing was canceled due to this, the hospital can not answer.
Yes, thank you cards were sent out to everyone whom donated money.
Is This Fraud? What Should She Do?
Ok.
My boyfriends mom is having a major back surgury done in February. She had a person donate $10,000 to her for the expenses. She has all the money that has been donated and earned in a medical account, with her friend who is also on the account. She will be out of town for about 2 to 3 weeks, and she decided that it might be useful for her to have a laptop for research and bill paying. She used some of her medical money for this. Her friend called her in hysterics telling her that it was fraud and that she had to send it back or else she would take herself off the medical account and she wouldn’t go with her.
Is buying the computer really fraud? She’s willing to send it back, if she’s going to get in trouble, but not just because her friend says she has to. She has other people to go with her, and that she can put on the account.
Thanks
–Julie ?
As I said, She is willing to send the computer back, and she didn’t know that she wasn’t supposed to buy the laptop with that money, because it was donated by all family, but she was just wondering if that was just her friend being dumb, or if she was right. She will send the computer back immediately.
Sorry guys!
the donations were made to cover ALL costs, not just medical bills. that’s why she didn’t know it would be fraud
Is It Illegal to Ask for Donations to a Fake Cause?
If you made a website and ask for donations to fund a sick persons medical bills and there was no sick person would this be illegal, and if so what is it called. Im gussing fraud, but what would be the legal terms for this action.
