It Health Insurance Fraud if I Have Two Insurances at the Same Time?
I have health insurance through my employment and another insurance through my mom’s. I just had a procedure earlier today and asked the registrar upfront before the procedure of they could co-bill both insurances at the same time, and she adviced not to, and adviced me to let all my doctors know that i have another insurance, and that i would be in big trouble. i really am confused on what’s going on. can anyone help me please? thanks
I appreciate all the info guys. the thing is that I use my mom’s insurance as my primary since all the facilities and providers I see and get my procedures done are under the same name, and my mom works in a hospital under the same name.
I guess what I really want to know is what I need to do at this point to avoid getting into trouble.
I remember giving BOTH insurance information in one procedure way back (blood draw) but still paid the same co-pay amount for my mom’s insurance.

Of course, you can have more than one insurance. One will be your primary, and any others will be secondary. This is something you will need to work out with the agents from the insurance was purchased. Doctors’ offices know all about this, and the problem that you had with the receptionist at the doctor could have easily settled by the insurance dept. at the DR. office.
It is always a good idea to clarify your insurance situation with the Dr. office before any procedure, but you may rest assured that you are not commiting any crime if you have acquired both policies legitimately.
you can only have one primary insurance company or its fraud. but i wouldn’t worry. if your mom has you on her insurance, it is probably no longer affective for you, she may just simply have a family plan, with all the names on it. but she can only carry you if you are a an unemployed college student, until the age of 23. you don’t meet that criteria and your medical bills should only be sent to your insurance company through work and your mom’s insurance info not even given. i hope this helped, like i said, don’t worry. :)
why pay 4 2 insurance. Ur mom’s policy should not cover u if u have other insuranve and if it does dump the one one from work theywill pay u i think check it out.
The law states that one of your insurance company would be the primary company and the other would be secondary. They will then apportion your payment between the two of them. You are not breaking any law. Just let the Doctor know that you have two policies.
Depending on your age, your mother’s insurance may be primary if you are under 25 and still attend school. If you are older, or married and work, you should choose the best insurance coverage as your primary insurance. I don’t think you can double insure anymore. If you are under someone else’s benefits, talk to your personnel office to see if you can get financial pay for not using the benefits.
Yes you can be covered by two different insurances,my children are, one through their father and one through me. If you gave the hospital both insurance information and they double-billed then it is their problem not yours. You cannot get in trouble for having two insurances. As the other person stated one is primary and one is secondary.
Speak to the registrars supervisor, and see if they can help you figure it out, sounds like the woman you talked to was unfamiliar with the situation.
Good luck
