I Got Calls From a Company to Collect Medical Bill That the Service Date Was in 2002?

medical billing fraud
meihsia asked:

a debt collector keeps calling me and asking me to pay a medical bill (they said the service date as in 2002….. 4 years ago???) through telephone but refuse to send me the statement.

I really am not sure what that bill is about and I need to look at it first before I pay. they’ve kept calling for a month every other day …

I surely will pay the bill if that’s not a fraud call and I really don’t like they call so often. But I definitely will not pay if I don’t see the statement. What can I do?

I would ask to speak to the supervisor next time they call you. Telling them you would be more than happy to settle your account with them, but you don’t remember a past due account, and you would relaly like something for your own personal records. If they still won’t send you anything. Contact the hospital billing department directly and explain your situation. They would be more than willing to help you out.

Will they tell you who the medical bill is with and the account number? If they will then you can call the hospital or doctor’s office or insurance company that is listed and they will be able to pull up the disputed bill.

You are right not to want to pay without seeing the bill first.

    Good luck.

Every other day? Sounds like harassment…

Tell them that they are in violation of Federal Law (the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act) because a) they need to provide you with a written statement of the debt they allege you owe and b) are calling you in a harassing manner. Also inform them that you are recording every call you have with them.

Do not give them access to your bank accounts over the phone! I wouldn’t even give them my crdit card number. Insist on a written, mailed statement.

Jsut remember: if the debt collector is breathing, he’s lying.

The collection agency can provide you with the name and phone number of the company who referred the account to them. I would recommend contacting them. They would have the information you need. Also, some companies use a primary and secondary collection agency. If the account has made it to a secondary agency (b/c it is so old) they would have very limited information.

    Good Luck.
