Questions About National Health Care?
Many people seem to be for a national health plan that will be written by non-medical politicians and will be a monopoly on health care that limits ability to have access to medical attention not covered by the plan.
Is it possible to have our government write a plan that will not guarantee high profits to those who donated large sums to a candidate’s campaign?
Will the plan eliminate (or at least address) Medicare and Medicaid fraud?
Will the plan continue to pay the high salaries of non-medical CEO’s who own health care facilities, testing centers and treatment centers?
Will tax payers be expected to pay higher land/homeowner taxes making owning a home impossible so that non tax payers can continue to have better health coverage than those who pay taxes and own assets that must be depleted if one needs medical care?
Will our national leaders get the same coverage as everyone else if a national health plan is started? (Will legislators get the same limitations as tax payers who vote(d) for them?)

I would predict funding shortages and occassional tax increases to fund it.
All of our smartest people choosing different fields rather than medicine.
Long lines at hospitals, waiting lists for operations, incompetence at every level.
Lots of deductions from my paycheck.
HMM id rather just shop around for a good health care plan, budget for it, and pay for it myself, like car insurance.
1) The Constitution does not give the government authority to “run health care”.
2) The government cannot run a “profit free” program. They will always spend 200% – %500
3) The politicians will ALWAYS favor special interests. Think big pharma.
4) The politicians will ALWAYS have personal doctors.
5) “National Health” will create doctor shortages, and we will need to import labor.
6) National healthcare, will create strict “without parental permission” vaccinations of children. The types of vaccines that get children taken away and parents arrested upon refusal.
7) All alternative medecine would be strictly regulated. Vitamins will be taken off the market. You would not be able ot escape big pharma.
You must realise, once “the state” is paying for your health care, things you do deemed as “unhealthy” to them make you a liability. So there will be widespread changes in law reguarding personal activities. Expect this with time.
Remember, in a free society, citizens work for, and pay for goods and services. Government is just employed by us to help ensure our GOD GOVEN RIGHTS are not violated.
Good questions to be asking. And your run of the mill democrat will still think: “great, free stuff”.
Our nation knows how to innovate and how to compete. Rather than increasing market participation, we are running away from it? The future of health care does not look good.
The price tag alone is enough to make me pass out! Also regardless of the price, coverage, or benefits the job of the government is not to provide us with food and drink and health care and anything else! Get the government out of our personal lives and lower Federal spending! And one last thing, whenever the government gets involved with a market/service it messes that whole area up!!!
Ron Paul 2008
The Constitution (its still on the books) is not to restrain the people it is for the people to restrain the government
Taxes would go through the roof! No escaping this no matter what anyone promises.
And if goes into effect; don’t expect the best care; the best Drs. will leave or stop practice.
Needless to say access to care will be dismal.
Take a look at Canada.
Money does not get filtered into private companies as the goverment owns all the hospitals.
Everyone from the poorest to the richest person recieves the same treatment for any medical condition.
If you are low income and cannot afford perscription drugs, the government covers it…you pay $4 for any perscription.
Taxes are higher but not enough to prevent everyone from owning a home, enjoying living or even saving money for the future.
Hospitals are not over-run and under staffed, they also have the most modern equipment and train and employ some of the best medical practioners in the world.
Think of what it would be like, for someone with no heath coverage from work, to be able to never think twice about going to the hospital for stiches, a broken limb, or even a fractured finger?
The whole idea has me worried. As a working American, I pay enough for just my health insurance- just for me $180.00 a month and I’m a school teacher-state employee. I’m also on an HMO plan- which already tells me who and what is covered. My husband recently lost his job and to add him to my plan was going to cost an extra $400.00 – total – 580.00 a month for 2 people.
Your questions are valid and need answers- I am also worried. I worry about not only supporting myself, but helping support everyone without insurance. I want the Doctors I go to now- I have a lot of health problems- but I do get good care.
I am all for a Single-Payer Universal Health Care system!!!
Unfortunately the big money that currently owns our election system is against it.
Just what are you smoking?
Elected officials NEVER get the same thing as the people they serve.
Nationalized health care has never worked anywhere. And why would you expect that a government official would give you anything useful in health care when they don’t even want to give us a secure border?
There is health care in this nation. That’s good enough for me, and I don’t even have insurance.
Socialism has never worked anywhere. It sure as hell won’t “fix” health care.
I get my healthcare cheap enough through my employer, but if I get sick e first thing to go is my job, and the same day my health care disapears. I am guaranteed 18 months of Cobra insurance but it is legal to set the rates based on what the illness that caused me to lose my job will cost.
So, lets say it is a curable form of cancer. That will cost about a quarter million to 320,000. (I work in a hospital) I do pay for long term disability insurance through my employer that will give me 80% of my pay after six weeks. I do make more money than the average three families in my area.
So my Cobra insurance payments will be a lot more than I could possibly afford.
I guess Medicaid is my only option. Oh and probably yours too.
Which major candidate is pushing a plan that would be a single payer system. I think that that is going to be the only way to achieve true universal health care but so far only Kucinich has signed on to that type of plan.
The other democratic candidates have proposed making a Government run alternative to provide services to the uninsured and ensure that no one can be rejected because of pre-existing conditions.
John Edwards feels that such a plan will become the more favorable alternative so though I don’t think his plan goes far enough right away it is probably a good step forward.
Please, instead of parroting the same old tired reasons for not having Universal Healthcare, check out the following websites and then decide. Instead of blindly repeating what the politicians tell you, use the Internet and determine for yourself the facts about the other countries. What we have now is not working for many of Americans so why not try something else. I got the first two websites from an answer submitted by Captain Starkiller from the U.K. and the third shows HR 676, a bill proposing true Universal (Not-for-profit) Healthcare. Even the Doctors are for it. I agree, this is too much to ask for but we can hope.
I am not affiliated with any party, but health care is the priority topic in this election and we as a nation should shout it out.
Since Wal Mart can sell meds for as little as $4.00 and build new stores every week, let’s put them in charge of the supposed universal health care. No kidding, if Canada does a good job at it, let’s surrender to them now or ask them to annex us, is that allowed? It’s a shame people fall through the bureaucracy cracks all the time. The Democrats are at least putting plans on the table, the Republicans only want to give you a tax cut to buy your own. Let me ask, if you don’t work now, uninsurable, unable to get Medicaid, can’t file bankruptcy again against your medical bills, I have yet seen or heard any of their plans that would cover that. Bill Clinton in 93′ as I recall ran on the promise in his administration we would have universal health care, in fact once elected it was so dern important, he dumped the job on Hillary to report to Congress, yea right, like that would work. So Hillary, I am still waiting for my free health care. By the way, the Insurance companies are among the richest in this nation and hiring all the time, so what happens to them? If they are left in this as I see it, then nothing much will change and the government will fill the bill and who pays for that? With all the candidates running, I see John Edwards with the most sincerity and he has been running the longest.
Why is it that America can’t give all their people a good health insurance for those that are in need of it
But can spend 2 billion dollars a month on the war
give billions to the CIA
But not for their ownsick
All I can say is, It’s a sad day when the U.S. feels they are less competent than the Canadians and more corrupt than the French.
Both countries manage to provide better care to their citizens. They are just smarter or more generous? Come on!
Sure they have less people. They also have a smaller tax base. It all on the same scale.
What stops us? The big corporations that own our health care system. The same people that put out doom and gloom statistics about what would happen if we take health care out of their big money sucking hands. Why do they spend so much time and effort to stop universal health care. Because they know if enough U.S. citizens demand that health care come back into the control of regular people in a non-profit capacity….it WILL BE DONE. Government doesn’t need to run health care…they just need to take it out of the hands of the corporations and non-medical CEOs and give it back to the non-profits, the churchs, the doctors and nurses.
Yes, others say profit fuels innovation? The only innovation we’ve seen is happy pills, sleeping pills, and erection pills! Still no cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, MD, MS, CP cures…..but Mr. Richy Rich can be happy, “active” and sleep at night. I’m not buying it. This doesn’t even mention the new emerging diseases on the horizon.
Our leaders always make sure they get the best of anything, so no, they would not likely use the “national health” they would foist on us.
No reason to keep the basics of this current system–too much government involvement (for the worse) and too few large insurers playing games with us.
Better system proposed here–read the PDF:
Affordable CATASTROPHIC COVERAGE plan for all interested Americans with NO new taxes for people or employers. Includes one physical and follow up and one ER visit per year with co-pays. No more “donut holes” for prescriptions or ridiculous caps for needed treatments. Funding IS explained.
Whole chapter provides LOTs of other solid ideas as well.
It depends on what system the US adopts. If it choses to change the healthcare (or non-care) system you have.
I live in the UK and work in the NHS (our universal health care system). It has problems, but not as many as the US healthcare system has. Despite spending much more per head of population than other developed countries, the US has worse health outcomes. Life expectancy and infant mortality figures in the US are higher than in other developed countries, despite more money being spent (and wasted) in the USA.
In the UK there are waiting lists for routine problems. Problems that can not wait are treated as emergencies. Also, in the UK, people can also have private health care.
I can understand Americans being proud of living in the richest and most powerful country in the world. What I can not understand is why Amercians settle for an expensive healthcare system where babies die that would have a better chance of life if born in another developed country.

I think the question should be if we are expected to take care of ourselves then why don’t we have access to a more open market. In other words why can’t we legally import prescription drugs? Seems like a double standard to me-take care of yourself but pay the highest prices for medication in the world.
