Can Anything Be Done About This Hospital Bill?

rekomstopa asked:

Sept. 9, 2001 I went to the emergency room with sever stomach pains. I was told I had IBs, given some pain meds and sent home. September 10, I returned to the E.R. And was sent home again with no answers. September 11, 2001 After witnessing the most horrific event in my lifetime I was taken to the E.R. by a friend to be accused of looking for pain meds. I flipped out and they had to get a new doctor. Finally I was diagnosed with c-diff. A simple check to find out i had been on antibiotic a week prior may have helped. needless to say by this point the infection was so bad I was admitted for 5 days. Now I am stuck with a $5000 hospital bill for something that could have been treated outpatient with antibiotics. I am trying to fix my credit but am having a hard time paying for their mistakes. Should I fight it or should I just make payment arrangements?

Generally, you cannot win a case where you are misdiagnosed if the symptoms could have been something else.

You have nothing to lose by writing to them and telling that you won’t pay for their sloppy work. But I don’t think you would win in court.

    Pay your bill

Why did you go to the ER. This isn’t an emergency. You should have seen a regular doctor. An emergency is if you break a bone, or cut your leg off, get shot, mvc, trauma. I have worked in an ER for 9 years and we see people like you everyday. The thing you must realize is that the ER was probably short staffed and over worked with hundreds of other non emergent patients. If people like you and them would go to a regualr docor instead of an ER then they staff there could provide better care for those who really need it.
