My Husband Was Coded Blue in a Hospital and I Was Not Called. What Would You Do?
catrina b asked:
My husband was overdosed in the hospital, because the nursing staff could not read the orders correctly. He was coded Blue, and sent to the ICU unit. I live over 6 hours away, they never called to tell me what was going on. I called the hospital after not hearing form my husband all day. I am here at the hospital now. They are acting like this was no big deal; but I know it was, I feel like we were overlooked in so many ways, I even asked to see a social worker because my husband is freeked out, they sent one in but she had no sempothy at all. Why is it that they act like this is no big deal?
So confused. Now we will have even more medical bills for the hospitals mistake. We talked to the pain doctors, and asked them what happened and they said; “the nureses dont know how to read”.
A nurse commented about the person in ICU and how they would stabalize he or she, I totally understand this, but this was 12 hours latter, That is no excuss…

law suit. i hope he gets better fast :)
The Nurses need to go back to nursing school.. WOW!! you really should get your husband far away from that wacky hospital!!
GET a LAWYER NOW !
Sue the pants off of them and report the incident to the state immediately. They will investigate the hospital.
If you are next of kin, they are REQUIRED to notify you of any changes in his condition.
I would say it is time to get a lawyer.. Good Luck
WOW, “The nurses don’t know how to read”!? What a great excuse…and what a great answer from a DOCTOR! What happened to your husband is a big deal, you not being notified is a big deal, the nurses not knowing how to read is a big deal, and the pain doctor giving you a dumb answer is a big deal! I wouldn’t trust my husband at this hospital. You definitely shouldn’t have to cover the expenses because of their mistake. Focus on your husband right now & deal with these morons later!!!
First of all doctors always blame someone else. Their hand writing is atrocious. If you were to see it you would understand. Often when you think it’s pretty clear that it says 25mg the doctor actually wrote 2.5mg. Medication errors are a horrible thing and they happen more often then they should.
In a code situation they don’t call the family until after because the primary focus is on the patient. Family has many questions and at that moment it isn’t the right time to explain what’s going on.
Get a lawyer, NOW!
It’s called negligence. Find as much paper with handwriting on it as possible. The doctors blame the nurses, but I am sure the nurses blame the doctors. You will be looking for the papers that chart his every medication, time, and dose. It should have the Dr’s orders on it too.
Also, report the incedent to the state health board. In the least you want to file a complaint.
As soon as the hospital gets wind of the lawsuit, you won’t be able to shut them up for the excuses.
i would talk to a lawyer and see about switching hospitals,
speak to someone in patient relations. if they don’t offer a solution, then request to speak directly to the hospital administrator. the actions of those nurses should not be tolerated! get an attorney asap and file a law suit. before you leave the hospital speak to the charge nurse, give her your phone number and ask that she contact you is anything goes wrong with your husband or if his condition deteriorates.
