Hospital Bill?
j_lynn_griff asked:
I was just wondering if anyone may know about the drug cefazolin. Aparently I was given this in an IV while I wan in the hospital for a gall bladder attack, but I don’t remember it. When I looked it up on the FDA web site it didn’t sound like anything I should have been given at the time.
I was 22 weeks pregnant when I went to the ER with the attack.
Could this just be a mistake on my bill? If it is a mistake how would I handle it with the hospital? Do I go to the billing dept or the med records? Any help would be appreciated.
Also, does anyone know what Amylase and Lipase are? Showed up on the same hospital bill. They are some sort of tests, but I can’t figure out for what.

Cefazolin is an antibiotic that was probably given in the ER or in the hospital. It has different names, look them up (Ancef is one). Amylase and Lipase check for Pancreatitis, they are blood tests and would have been routinely ordered. If you feel there is an error in billing, contact the billing department. Medical records will be needed to confirm or deny the claim, however remember this statement-”If it is not documented, it was not done” If they can not show you the test was ordered, and the results, or the medicine was given, than you dont have to pay for it.
The bills received from hospitals are meant to be confusing, and misleading. I would write to the Accounts Receivable Dept. **Writing is much more safe than phone calls, because once you hang up, the call never took place. This way, you have a record. Ask for a breakdown of what each charge is, in layman’s terms.
Once you know what they are charging you for, then ask if it was necessary. The Hospital Administrator would be the next person to contact after AR.

Cefazolin is an antibiotic they gave you for acute cholecystitis. Investigations like S. Amylase & S. Lipase are also indicated for ruling out other possibilities when dealing with a GB case.
This all checks, but you should be given reports if the investigations have been done.
Good luck!
